Text style

Using a bold text style means professional designers will emphasize making your company name bolder. For example if you take some powerful manufacturing logos like The Saxon Group, you will notice that the designers made the ‘S’ bold and stand out in red. Difficult times for architecture students

When times are tough, companies cut costs, diversify, and hope to survive until the boom comes. As a result, they are forced to take a Read Me short-term view, reduce training and reduce their investment in the future. One of the areas to suffer is recruitment in general and graduate recruitment in particular. So the first graduates who paid for their education through student fees could find the job they wanted.

According to the CBI Employment Trends report, almost two-fifths of employers have stopped hiring graduates and another 10% are reducing their numbers. Only 5% more graduates plan to be hired. Unsurprisingly, the construction sector has been hit hard by the decline in the number of construction projects, with 54% of companies ceasing graduate recruitment.

The Higher Education Careers Service Unit reported 8.9% of graduates were out of work, the worst figure since 1993. Architecture and building, mechanical engineering and civil engineering have the lowest graduate unemployment rates, while the figures for those pursuing construction careers are even worse. and engineering. at 10.9%, 11.8% and 11.9% respectively. The good old days…

The current situation is in stark contrast to two years ago when most organizations were overwhelmed with work and opportunities over staffing. At the same time there is a shortage of skilled construction professionals and young people are actively encouraged to pursue construction degree courses. Industry sponsored courses and paid leave placements have seen an increase in the number and demand for construction courses. It is not uncommon for people to wait for a graduate to get a job with their sponsoring company while using offers from other potential employers.

Despite the current problems, having a degree remains an asset, with graduates expected to earn an average of £160,000 more over their careers than those with an A level qualification. A disadvantage for the construction sector is that only 25% of construction jobs require degree level skills, which is below average. This is due to several factors such as the number of manual jobs, the large number of small and medium enterprises (more than 250,000) and the fact that 40% of the workforce is self-employed. However, many large companies, including Atkins, Balfour Beatty and Carillion, have graduate recruitment programs, although they have reduced their hiring levels.

Advice for today’s graduates…

The message for graduates seeking work in the construction industry is to research well and be flexible. Employers are generally looking for candidates who have a relevant degree with at least a 2:2 or equivalent grade, so courses in architecture, civil engineering, surveying, construction and building studies are a good start.

In addition to academic knowledge, employers welcome a good technical background and some relevant skills. These include business acumen, initiative, teamwork and good IT, communication and organizational skills. Many academic courses involve the development of these skills, which employers value more if they are acquired in conjunction with some form of work experience.

Having work experience is a huge advantage for any graduate looking for employment.

This can be achieved through a one-year industrial placement, if this is not available, there are other options. Some construction companies offer gap year opportunities, while others, due to tighter financial conditions, offer paid or unpaid internships and placements rather than formal placements. If all else fails, students should consider volunteering or temporary positions, any type of work experience is better than none, and at least demonstrate motivation and enthusiasm.

As work is scarce, graduates should prepare their job applications and be prepared to take a position that is offered, even if it is not ideal for their abilities and ambitions. At least it gets them into a company and gives them work experience and a chance for future advancement. Here too, the management hierarchy may be shallow and chances of upward promotion less, so patience is required in the current environment.
